Abstract
1295715 Heat insulated pipes; laying pipes, thermal insulation AMERICAN GILSONITE CO 3 Feb 1970 [19 Feb 1969] 5101/70 Headings F2P and F2X [Also in Division E1] A heat insulating and corrosion resistant covering material for pipes, underground tanks, building foundations, rail and road beds and bridge structures, comprises particulate coal which may be of bitumous or sub-bitumous or of lignite type. Particulate coal is found to sinter at temperatures in excess of 494 F. Since sintering results in brittleness and moisture penetration with consequent corrosion of the structure, the coal, unlike conventional materials, provides a stable, flexible and impervious heat-insulating covering. The coal particles may be mixed with other materials, e.g. hollow glass balls to modify the properties of the covering.
