1295479 Flame resistant acrylonitrile polymer filaments and films JAPAN EXLAN CO Ltd 22 May 1970 [22 May 1969] 25031/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Flame-resistant acrylic articles, e.g. fibres or films, are made by shaping an acrylonitrile copolymer containing at least 50% by weight of acrylonitrile units and also lactone units of the formula in which R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. The copolymers are obtained by treating a compolymer of acrylonitrile with a monomer having, or being capable of producing a hydroxyl group, e.g. in an aqueous acid medium, so as to effect lactonization. Suitable hydroxy or hydroxy-yielding monomers include allyl alcohol, methallyl alcohol, vinyl ethers, allyl ethers, vinyl esters, allyl esters, methallyl esters and isopropenyl esters. The copolymers may also include units of a halogen-containing monomer, e.g. vinyl chloride or bromide or vinylidene chloride as well as of other comonomers such as allylsulphonic or methallylsulphonic acid or a salt thereof, or styrene. In examples, filaments are spun from aqueous thiocyanate or dimefhylformamide solutions of the copolymers, and these are then stretched in boiling water or polyethylene glycol, dried and heat-treated in superheated steam. Also, a film about 0À1 mm. thick is formed on a glass plate from a dimethylformamide copolymer solution.
