Abstract
1295267 Polypropylene mats ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 8 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968 59738/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] Non-woven polypropylene mats are produced by a process which comprises thermally treating the polypropylene at a temperature between 600‹ and 900‹ F.; extruding the melt through a row of die openings in a die head; passing a stream of hot gas through gas slots immediately above and below the row of die openings to attenuate the extruded polymer essentially in a direction away from said die openings and collecting the attenuated fibres on a continuously moving take-up device positioned from 1 to 24 inches from said die openings. Polypropylene from hopper 1 is heated in the extruder 2 and/or the die head 3, preferably at a temperature between 620‹ and 800‹ F. The melt is forced by drive motor 4 into the die head 3 which contains a heating plate (5) to heat the die to a temperature between 575‹ and 750‹ F. The melt is then extruded through die openings 6, into a hot gas stream, preferably air at a temperature of 540-1000‹ F. from jets 11 and 12, which attenuates the polymer into continuous fibres 7, which are collected on a moving drum 9 to form a continuous mat 10. Mats produced from this process have fibre diameters of 1-50 microns and are self-bonded (hereinbefore defined). Examples of the process are given. Specification 1,055,187 is referred to.
