1295071 Indicating-apparatus JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 3 Feb 1970 [18 Feb 1969] 8611/69 Heading G1J An indicating instrument (e.g. a speedometer) comprises a pointer 18 movable relative to a scale on a transparent or translucent dial 11, illuminated by internal reflection of light and having a rib 14 bounding at least the portion of the dial swept by the pointer 18, the rib including a surface 15 which reflects some of the internally reflected light onto the pointer 18, and an optical cable 22 through which light enters the dial 11, the cable being secured to the dial so that light from the cable enters the dial adjacent the periphery of the dial and parallel to a tangent at the periphery of the dial. When a source of light is illuminated, e.g. when the vehicle side lights are in use, the optical cable transmits light from one end adjacent the source to the other end which is received in a bore 19 in the rib 14 for interval reflection from a cylindrical surface 21 and the surface 15. The dial may be made of a synthetic resin, the scale may be formed as recesses in the rear surface 12 of the dial and the recesses may be filled with white gloss paint, a matt black backing plate is provided adjacent the surface 12 and the surfaces 15, 21 are highly polished and then aluminized.
