Abstract
1294927 Metal melting furnaces G J GROTT 27 Jan 1970 3857/70 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] A furnace for retaining steel from scrap (see Division C7) comprises an upper burning section B, a lower refining section D, a vaporization section C and a vestibule charging and preheating section A, said vestibule section including an inner door 52 and an outer door 51, and a ram 53 for moving the scrap, said burning section and said vaporization section including valve controlled air jets 64 and said refining section including an oxygen lance 22 and end burners 60. The refining section D also includes fuel jets (63, Fig. 3) in the side walls for introducing tangentially of the oxygen jet a hydrocarbon gas so as to protect the walls thereof from oxide material thrown up by the oxygen jet. With door 52 closed scrap charges are inserted into the vestibule section A whereupon door 51 is closed and door 52 opened to preheat the charges by radiation from section B. The preheated charges are pushed by ram 53 into section B over the grate 54, whereupon organic residues are burnt and most of the non-ferrous scrap is melted. In section C:-Cd, Zn, Sn, Pb and Sb, are vaporized as oxides or metals and the residual ferrous metal is melted and collects in section D where it is refined.
