Abstract

1294853 Ionization gas analysis DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 5 Jan 1970 [3 Oct 1968] 46905/68 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] A gas or vapour sample is analysed by mixing the sample with a pure inert gas having an ionization potential greater than or equal to the ionization potential of the sample, exciting, by means of a radio-active source, the mixture at a pressure between 5 and 40 torr to ionize at least a proportion of the sample, and comparing the resulting ionization current with the current resulting under the same excitation conditions in a stream of the inert gas alone. As shown, the rare gas and sample enter through inlet 3 from which it is passed through a detector 6 having a cathode 7, an anode 9, and a radio-active source 16. The detector is surrounded by a vacuum sealed casing 1. The pressure is maintained within the limits by a pump connected to the outlet 4. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a purified inert gas is first passed through a chromatographic column and thence to the detector 6 and the ionization current is measured. The gas sample is then injected into the inert gas stream upstream of the chromatographic column and the resulting ionization currents measured.
