Abstract

1294765 Heading P L ROBERTSON MFG CO Ltd 19 June 1970 [23 June 1969] 29877/70 Heading B3H [Also in Division F2] A screw has a recess which is centered on and symmetrical with the longitudinal axis of the screw and which in plan view presents eight symmetrically disposed corners at 45 degrees to each other with any four alternate corners lying on the corners of a square, the other four corners lying on the corners of another square disposed at 45 degrees to the first square. A square cross-section driving tool is adapted to engage the corresponding corners of the recess in order to turn the screw. The side walls 2, 3 of the recess are inclined inwardly towards the bottom of the recess at an angle of 3-3À5 degrees relative to the screw axis, and the bottom of the recess may be conical having an angle of 50-56 degrees relative to a perpendicular to the screw axis. The upper edges of the wall portions may be chamfered. The recess may be formed in flat head screws using the punch 15 shown in Fig. 1, or in round headed screws by using a punch (20) (Fig. 4, not shown) shaped to engage the round head.
