Abstract

1294739 Selective printing SCOPE Inc 29 Sept 1970 [13 Feb 1970] 46183/70 Heading B6F An impactless printer has a printing head 15 with a plurality of stylii 17 which reciprocates across the face of the paper 19 to be printed. A , continuous belt 25 is driven between the head 15 and the paper 19 below the printing stylii 17. Means 37 are associated with the belt so as to drive the head in a scan manner across the paper against the bias of a spring 23. At the end of the line, the head is released from the influence of the belt 25 and returns to the left hand side of the paper. In (Fig. 2) the printing head 15 is pivotally and slidably mounted on a rod (13) extending across the width of the paper. When a lower leg (45) of the head 15 rests in and rides along an angular scan channel (51), the stylii 17 are forced into contact with the paper 19. However, when leg (45) rests in and rides along return channel (53), the stylii are removed from contact with the paper. Change-over from one channel to the other is achieved with deflecting springs (57, 59, Fig. 3). Rigid L-shaped members 33, 35, 37 and 39, Fig. 1, are secured to belt 25 at spaced intervals and contact the head 15 to drive the same. Alternatively, apertures (70, Fig. 6) are engaged by a pin (77, Fig. 7) carried by the printing head 15 when it is pivoted to the printing position. In (Figs. 8 and 9), the head is removed from the paper in a direction transverse to the plane of the paper. The head (85) comprises a substantially planar body which rests in and rides in a scan channel (81) and a return channel (83) which are parallel to each other. When the head reaches the end of a line, deflector springs (93 and 95, Fig. 9) move it in a direction transverse to the plane of the paper from one channel to the other. Margin stop.-Upon receipt of a carriage return signal, the head 15 is driven at high speed to the end of the line, and returns itself to the left hand end where it is picked up by the driving belt still moving at high speed. It is then carried a short distance to a left hand margin switch (68, Fig. 4) which establishes the left hand margin.
