Abstract
1294352 Seaming non-metallic sheet material E S & A ROBINSON (HOLDINGS) Ltd 19 June 1970 [23 June 1969] 31516/69 Heading B5K A peelable seal between a first substrate and a paper substrate is formed by applying a heat sealable adhesive composition to the first substrate, the adhesive composition being of the type which permits subsequent peeling apart of the substrates after heat sealing; applying a lacquer to the paper substrate to an extent which does hot substantially impair the gas permeability of the paper, the lacquer comprising a vinyl polymer or copolymer and being incompatible with the adhesive composition under heat sealing conditions, i.e. the lacquer and the adhesive composition are maintained as separate coatings; and heat sealing the first substrate and the paper substrate together with the applied adhesive and lacquer. The lacquer may be (a) a terpolymer containing maleic acid terpolymerized with vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, (b) a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, or (c) polyvinyl acetate, or a mixture thereof. Preferably, the heat sealing adhesive composition comprises an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and polystyrene. The first substrate may comprise a laminate of cellulose film and polyethylene film, the adhesive composition being applied to the polyethylene surface. The lacquer is applied to the paper substrate from solution as an all-over coating, e.g. by a gravure cylinder. Heat sealing is effected by a jaw at a temperature of 65-250‹ C., e.g. 100-190‹ C. A package sealed as described above may hold sterilized needles or surgeons' gloves and may be sterilized after sealing.
