1294133 Reciprocating pumps for liquids and gases UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Jan 1970 [15 Jan 1969] 2509/69 Headings F1A and F1N In a pump for injecting amounts of radioactive fluid into a fluid stream, the pump piston 20 is actuated by a spring-loaded plunger 27. Piston 20 is mounted in a cylinder 14 in block 10 and is biased outwardly by a spring 23; escape of radio-active fluid is prevented by a phosphorbronze bellows 22 between block 10 and a flange 21 on the piston. Plunger 27 passes through a plate 25 and is screwed through a disc 33, and is inwardly biased by a spring 31 between plate 25 and a flange 28 on the plunger. To operate the pump, disc 33 is rotated until plunger 27 is raised so that a pin 38 engages a slot 39 in the plunger; this compresses spring 31, the compression may be varied by axial adjustment of plate 25, and piston 20 moves under the action of spring 23 allowing the cylinder to be filled with tracer fluid from the reservoir 42. The disc is then further rotated to determine the stroke of the piston. On releasing pin 38 spring 31 reasserts itself and the piston drives fluid from the cylinder through a one way valve 16 into a fluid stream in conduit 17.
