Abstract
1294017 Artificial stone FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 8 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 27598/70 Heading C1H [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Synthetic resin concretes comprise a mixture of a granular filler and a binder which is a liquid adduct containing free isocyanate groups of a monomeric polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxy poly(oxyalkylene) polyether which contains at least one tertiary nitrogen atom, the NCO/OH molar ratio being 2:1 to 20:1. In general 1 to 20 parts by weight of binder are mixed with 99 to 80 parts by weight of filler. Quartz sand of various particle sizes (generally 0À1 to 7 mm.) is the preferred filler. Basalt chips, silicon carbide and corundum may be included to give added strength. Lightweight additives such as vermiculite, polystyrene foam and expanded clay may be used preferably in conjunction with a thickener such as bentonite. The synthetic resin concrete may be hardened due to the effect of atmospheric moisture or by applying moisture in the form of steam or mixtures of steam and air. The binder is preferably derived from an aromatic polyisocyanate and a polyether prepared by reacting ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with ammonia or amines (see Division C3).
