Abstract

1,126,094. Polyurethane coatings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Aug., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 40672/66. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as wood, rubber, metals, fabrics, hardboard, concrete, asbestos-cement, glass and plastics such as polyvinyl chloride may be coated with a moisture-curing polyurethane composition which has been prepared by reacting under anhydrous conditions, 4, 4'- idiisocyanato-diphenylmethane and a polyether containing at least 3 hydroxyl groups such that the NCO:OH ratio is at least 3.5:1. The diisocyanate is suitably reacted in its impure form obtained by condensing formaldehyde with aniline in the presence of a mineral acid to obtain diaminodiphenylmethane admixed with about 15% to 40% of higher polyamines and subjecting this mixture to phosgenation. Preferred polyethers are those having a M.W. of 250 to 4000 and suitably prepared by polymerising an alkylene oxide with a polyhydric alcohol, aminoalcohol or polyamine. The composition may be applied in the form of a solution in an organic solvent. The coatings may be cured by 'drying in air of normal temperatures or by storing at a temperature up to 140‹C.
