Abstract

1293954 Jointing by forging ED ZUBLIN AG 3 Nov 1969 [2 Nov 1968] 53705/69 Heading B3H [Also in Division F2] A sleeve 10 is connected to a finned concretereinforcing bar 17 of harder material than the sleeve by successively compressing adjacent sections of the sleeve to cause it to interlock around the fins on the bar. As shown an apparatus comprises a cylinder 1 having at one end a cover 2 which may be detachable and at the other end opposed axially directed slots 9 to receive the sleeve, a die 7 being inserted (e.g. by bayonet action) in the open end of the cylinder after location of the sleeve in the slots. An upper die 6 is acted upon by a piston 3 when fluid is admitted to the cylinder via port 16, the piston being retained by spring 14. In order to accurately locate the apparatus for successive compression of adjacent sleeve sections a guage 25 of U-shaped cross-section is secured to bar 18 and a hinged pawl 27 is engaged in the successive slots 30 therein. In order to obtain uniform compression of the sleeve each section may be compressed in at least two radial directions. This may be done by compressing the sleeve from end to end in one radial direction and then recompressing from end to end in a further radial direction, or may be done by compressing each section in more than one direction before progressing to the next section, the directions preferably being at right angles to each other. It is preferred to compress the sleeve sections between the ends to a greater degree than the section adjacent the ends, and the extreme ends of the sleeve may be left uncompressed by conically widening the sleeve ends (Fig. 5, not shown). The ends of the compressing dies 6, 7 are also widened to this end. The apparatus and method may be be applied to joining two bars together (e.g. as in Figs. 1, (5) and 15) or may be used to secure anchoring pieces to the bars. The anchoring piece may be a plain sleeve or may be belled at one end (e.g. as 102, Fig. 9). Alternatively the anchoring piece may be a loose fit on the bar and may abut a sleeve secured by the method of the invention. Two bars may be joined by welding the belled ends of anchoring pieces secured thereto (Fig. 13, not shown).
