Abstract
A connector 1 comprises a sleeve which has inturned teeth 8 top and bottom which engage with respective timber members 2 and 3 to connect them together. Flaps 10 divide the connector 1 centrally to prevent the timber members 2 and 3 from continued movement through the sleeve. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A timber connector
The present invention relates to improvements in and relating to timber connectors.
More particularly but not exclusively the present invention relates to a timber connector suitable for use in connecting together lengths of timber forming a composite pile for buildings.
Such composite piles are commonly used in
Asia when a pile which has been inserted into the ground is found to be of insufficient length and an additional length of timber is then connected thereto to complete the required length.
To the present time such composite piles have suffered from various disadvantages particular in that when the pile is being percussion driven into the ground usually by means of a drop hammer, the top pile has tended to rebound out of the metal sleeve by which the ends of the two lengths of timber forming the composite pile are usually connected together.
Other disadvantages of existing sleeve connectors include the fact that they do not grip the top timber member so that it is free to lift and also when one of the timber members is undersized at its end due to increased shrinkage it is then free to move about within the connector, both of which characteristics above mentioned being clearly undesirable and possibly dangerous.
It is thus an object of the present invention to provide a timber connector comprising a sleeve which can connect together a pair of timber members and which is particularly suitable for use in connecting together the ends of timber members forming a composite pile.
According to one embodiment of the present invention there is thus provided a timber connector comprising a sleeve adapted to receive therein from opposite ends thereof the respective end portions of a pair of timber members, a plurality of inturned teeth provided around the periphery of said sleeve to engage with a respective one of said timber members and to resist the movement thereof out of said sleeve.
The present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1: shows a connector according to one embodiment of the invention and in use connecting the ends of a pair of timber members.
Referring to the accompanying drawing a timber connector 1 is shown comprising an elongate sleeve which can snuggly accommodate the ends 2A and 3A of timber members 2 and 3.
The timber members 2 and 3 may be of the order of 5" or 6" square and the connectors 1 would be available in sizes having internal dimensions to accommodate such thicknesses.
The connector 1 is shown formed from two
L-shaped parts 4 and 5 having respective edge flanges 6 and 7 which overlap the other of the said members to enable spot welding to secure them together in forming the connector 1. Alternative forms of construction could of course be used, for example the flanges 6 and 7 could be replaced by lugs which can engage within apertures in the other of the members before being folded over to form the connector 1.
Each of the sides of the connector 1 is shown provided top and bottom with a plurality of inturned teeth 8 the tips of which 9 embed themselves within the respective timber members 2 and 3 to thus resist the separation of the members 2 and 3 once inserted into the connector 1. Although a pair of teeth 8 are shown on each side of the connector 1 it is to be appreciated that any number of teeth could alternatively be used depending largely on the forces of separation of the members 2 and 3 which are likely to be experienced.
At a substantially central portion of the connector 1 on each of its sides are shown inturned flaps 10 which act as dividing means separating the top and bottom of the connector 1 and acting as a stop against continued movement of either of the members 2 and 3 through the connector 1.
The connector 1 may be formed by any suitable technique and from any suitable material although 2-4 mm thick steel may be found to be appropriate.
In its use in forming a composite pile which may be 1 5 to 20 feet long, the connector 1 will be placed over the top of the top member which is too short and the second timber member forming the extension would then be inserted into the connector from the top.
Due to the embedding of the teeth 8 into the respective members 2 and 3 subsequent percussion driving of the composite pile into the ground by a drop hammer would not result in the upper timber member being able to escape from the connector 1 and hence from its connection with timber member 3. The enveloping connector 1 about the timber ends 2a and 3a will also obviate the spiitting or exploding of the ends during or subsequent to the driving operation and the teeth 8 embedded in the upper member 2 would subsequently resist its uplifting from the connector 1.
Furthermore in the event that either of the timber member ends 2a or 3a were somewhat undersized the teeth 8 would still be able to engage with the ends and thus prevent movement of the ends within the connector 1.
Whilst a substantially square connector 1 has been described other internal shapes such as circular could be used in order to accommodate similarly shaped timber members.
1. A timber connector comprising a sleeve adapted to receive therein from opposite ends thereof the respective end portions of a pair of timber members, a plurality of inturned teeth provided around the periphery of said sleeve to engage with a respective one of said timber members and to resist the movement thereof out of said sleeve.
**WARNING** end of DESC field may overlap start of CLMS **.
Claims (6)
2. A timber connector as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said sleeve has four sides, each side having at least one inturned tooth adjacent either end of said sleeve to engage a respective one of said timber members.
3. A timber connector as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2 wherein a dividing means is provided substantially centrally of said sleeve to separate the ends of said timber members when inserted therein and to act as a stop against the continued movement of said timber members through said sleeve.
4. A timber connector as claimed in Claim 3 wherein said dividing means comprises a plurality of inturned fiaps extending into said sleeve.
5. A timber connector as claimed in Claim 1 comprising a pair of substantially L-shaped members secured together along the respective edges thereof.
6. A timber connector substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
