Abstract

1293727 Prophylactic cup INDIANA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION 27 April 1971 11578/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division B3] A dental prophylactic cup 10, which may be mounted in a conventional angled handpiece (12) (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a cylindrical body 14 of resilient material which provides a paste-holding cavity 18 and a screw 15 embedded in the cup by means of a head (16) (Fig. 3, not shown) the resilient material incorporating up to 15% by weight of an anticariogenic agent, and/or up to 50% by weight of a dental cleaning and polishing agent. A plurality of radial fins 20 are moulded integrally with the side walls 19 of cavity 18, the fins serving as auxiliary means of prophylactic paste application. The side walls may be tapered and of such a thickness that the downward force exerted on the body 14 during treatment causes the rim portion 22 to splay outwardly and thus the radial fins contact the tooth surface. The body of the cup may be made of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or certain plastics, e.g. nylon and polyethylene.
