Abstract

1293622 Stabilizing developed photographic silver images AGFA-GEVAERT AG 15 April 1970 [15 April 1969] 17945/70 Heading G2C Photographic silver images are produced by exposing a photographic silver halide material, developing in a bath containing at least one compound of one of the formulae: - wherein R<SP>1</SP> is mercapto; R<SP>2</SP> is a substituted or unsubstituted amino group; R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together may complete a 2-mercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole ring; X is O, S or NR<SP>3</SP>; R<SP>3</SP> is H, alkyl having up to 8 carbons, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or amino which groups may be substituted; and Y is alkylene having up to 10 methylene groups, alkylene having 3-10 methylene groups which are interrupted by one or more hetero atoms or groups, cycloalkylene, arylene or aralkylene, Y being attached to the heterocyclic rings either directly or via an oxygen or sulphur atom or an imino group, and stabilizing the unexposed and undeveloped silver halide. One or more developing agents e.g. hydroquinone may be present in the photographic material and development may then be initiated with an aqueous alkaline initiator bath. The development bath preferably contains 0À5-10g per litre of the compound(s) defined above, many examples of which are listed. The stabilizer bath preferably contains ammonium thiocyanate and may contain formaldehyde or cyclohexanonesodium bisulphite addition compound. The stabilized black silver images have improved keeping quality on prolonged storage under extreme climatic conditions owing to the presence of the heterocyclic compound(s) defined above in the development bath.
