Abstract
1293260 Cracking hydrocarbons JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO Inc 28 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969 20 July 1970 (2)] 51191/70 Heading C5E In a thermal or catalytic hydrocarbon cracking or catalytic dehydrogenation process an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt or hydroxide is introduced into the hydrocarbon flow downstream of the furnace zone, e.g. in the cooling or quenching apparatus, to prevent coke formation. Preferred compounds are the carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides of K, Na and Li, which may be used in amount 1-1000 p.p.m. based on the hydrocarbon feed. Specifically mentioned are the thermal cracking of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons to give predominantly ethylene, and the catalytic dehydrogenation of butanes and butenes to butadiene.
