Abstract

129,320. Sanders, H., and Alexander, H. Oct. 15, 1917. Tanks.-Petrol and oil tanks for aircraft consist of an inner container a, preferably of fabric, and a protective covering consisting of layers b, c of rubber or similar flexible material with an intervening layer g of material, such as wool, and with or without an external covering of compressed fibre. The space between the rubber layers is preferably divided into compartments by webs d, and the wool in each compartment may be entirely enclosed in a paper covering or provided with a paper or like covering-sheet. The container a has an opening strengthened by a ring k, which rests on a ring l secured round an opening in the protective covering, a cover m being secured by thumb-screws p. An outlet pipe is secured by nuts t, u. According to the Provisional Specification, protection against incendiary ammunition may be afforded by incorporating with the wool a fire-extinguishing chemical compound, either in liquid or powdered form. If a liquid material is used, the wool is hermetically sealed in celluloid containers.
