Abstract

1293161 Photo-sensitive materials KALLE AG 11 Nov 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 55103/69 Heading G2C [Also in Division B6] A photosensitive material for the production of continuous tone printing plates comprises a support coated with a light-sensitive layer (preferably containing a naphtho- or imino-quinone diazide or an azide) with hollows, the distance of the centre of one hollow to the next not exceeding the sum of the two diameters of adjacent hollows, the hollows having diameters from 1-50 microns (distances and diameters being measured at the outer surface of the layer) and the hollows decreasing with approach to the support. The hollows are produced by (i) incorporating in the layer particles of a substance which is insoluble in the coating solvent but at least partly soluble in a solvent in which the layer is insoluble and removing the particles by treating with the second solvent, e.g. crater-soluble sodium chloride particles or polyvinyl alcohol spheres in a water insoluble layer or (ii) embossing the control layer with a layer of brushed aluminium or glass balls of the desired diameter. Materials containing the hollows in the layer produces more steps when exposed to a step wedge than a smooth layer.
