Abstract
1293053 Gas nitriding steel USS ENG & CONSULTANTS Inc 24 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 30755/70 Heading C7U A mixture of ammonia and hydrogen is recirculated over the steel surface at 475-580‹ C. and atmospheric pressure, ACN and other nitriding inhibitors being removed during recirculation and the partial pressure of water vapour being adjusted to a value between 1 Torr and that which will oxidize the surface. The wet gas is then purged from the work during cooling. The gas may be purified by contact with an aqueous alkaline solution, which may be maintained at an appropriate temperature to maintain the desired partial pressure of water vapour, suitably 1 to 20 torr, in the gas. As illustrated, gas leaving reactor 10 is cooled in heat exchanger 40 and then passes through thermostatically controlled scrubber 44, preferably containing ammonium hydroxide. Fresh gas is introduced through line 34, and pressure maintained constant by bleed valve 51.
