Abstract

1293036 Regulating tyre pressures KLOCKNER - HUMBOLDT - DEUTZ AG 18 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 39711/70 Heading B7C [Also in Division F2] A wheel assembly for altering the pressure of a tyre mounted thereon, comprises a pipe which communicates with an annular duct in a permanent hub and with the tyre, the pipe including a pressure-responsive valve which is biased normally to close the pipe but is operable in response to air pressure on the hub side of the valve in excess of the biasing force to permit an alteration in the tyre pressure. A pressurized air reservoir (not shown) is connected via a control valve (not shown) to a bore 23 in the axle end 23, an annular space 32 between the axle 23 and a tube 31 surrounding a drive shaft 26, through a bore 34 in the axle into the annular duct 35, and through a bore 36 in a rotary joint member 29 to a connecting piece 16 of the pressure responsive valve 9. The valve 9, which is connected to the tyre 6 via a pipe (8) from a connection 14, comprises a stepped piston 12 with a bore 19 air-tightly slidable within a housing 11 and spring biased to seat normally against a ring 20. In operation, to inflate a tyre, the pressure control valve is actuated to admit pressurized air to the face 15 of the piston radially without the ring 20 to overcome the biasing force of the spring and lift the piston off its seat to allow air to pass along the bore 19 into the tyre; the control valve is subsequently actuated to stop the air supply and vent to atmosphere air within the hub and carrier and from the face 15, the piston reseating under the action of the spring. To decrease tyre pressure, air of pressure less than that required in the tyre is admitted to face 15 radially without the ring to lift the piston and allow the air in the tyre to flow therefrom along the bore 19, the control valve being subsequently closed and vented as above.
