Abstract

1293016 Water heaters WALTER KIDDE & CO Inc 4 Feb 1970 5420/70 Heading F4A A water heater for use in, e.g. aeroplanes, trains and caravans, comprises a tank 10 forming a space 23 into which cold water enters through an intake 14 and is divided into two flow paths, one path leading to heating elements 11 and a second flow path communicating with a cold water tube 17 located within a tube 19 connected to a hot water tap 15, the tubes 17, 19 having apertures 39 and holes 42 respectively such that during initial filling of the tank 10 water under pressure passes through the apertures 39 and holes 42 in a stream to prevent water leaving the heater before it is filled to the level of the holes 42. The cold water which flows through passageways 35 is directed by a deflector 36 towards the elements 11 mounted in bushings 24 and which are controlled by a thermostat 12 mounted in bushings 25. As the space 23 fills, air is expelled through vents 44 and tap 15 to a faucet (not shown) which has a ball float vent valve (not shown) that opens to permit air to escape but closes when water enters the valve. Expulsion of air stops when the water level reaches the vents 44, the remaining air being entrapped. The tube 19 continues to fill up. A steady flow of water is obtained when the faucet is opened, hot water then flowing through openings 45, 46 and the holes 42 to mix with the cold water in tube 19. The tank 10 is cylindrical and is closed by welded caps 21, 22.
