Abstract

1292965 Automatic edge guiding G PIATTELLI 15 Oct 1969 [18 Oct 1968 24 Sept 1969] 50699/69 Heading G3R The edge of a travelling web passes between a light source and a photo-electric detector, shielded from ambient light, so that variations of photo-cell output, due to lateral movements of the web, are amplified with rate feedback to restore the web to a desire path. In Fig.1, a web 118, to be edge-guided, passes between a light source 102 and a photo-resistor 107 in a detector head 112. The photo-transistor 107, which is screened from ambient light and receives light from source 102 through a filter 105, optical tunnel 104, and condenser 106, is connected to an integrated circuit 109 having an adjustable gain potentiometer 110 and a voltmeter 111 so that any error in the lateral position of the web results in a signal being applied through an amplifier 14a and controllers 24, 25, Fig.2, to operate a D.C. servomotor 17b which restores the web to the desired position. Rate feedback is provided by a tachometer generator 22a associated with servomotor 17b.
