Abstract

1315115 Automatic gain control for photodiodes or photo-transistor PLESSEY CO Ltd 27 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 26876/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division H4] An automatic gain control system for a photodiode 1 or photo-transistor in a circuit, Fig. 2, for detecting amplitude modulated light comprises a load resistance in the form of a F. E. T. 4, the resistance of which is varied with the intensity of light incident upon the diode to achieve automatic gain control. The output voltage developed across the F.E.T. 4 is compared with a fixed reference voltage by means of an operational amplifier 9 and the difference is applied through a feedback line to the gate of the F. E. T. 4 so as to bring about a change in its resistance, thereby ensuring a constant voltage output of the diode. The modulated signals are detected by virtue of a capacitor 12 the feedback line to afford a predetermined time constant which limits the speed of response of the circuit.
