Abstract

1292894 Strip material for aligned fibres; bonded fibrous material PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Oct 1970 [16 Oct 1969] 48589/70 Headings D1F and D1R A method of manufacturing a strip 10 of material which consists mainly of fibres aligned in the same direction and which are held together by a binder, comprises the step of contacting a continuously-moving stripshaped support with a flow surface of a suspension 2 of the fibres in a liquid so that the fibres deposited on the support are moved away from the surface of the suspension, the liquid bing more dense than the fibre material and wetting the fibres, and the line of intersection of the surface of the support on which the fibres are deposited and the surface of the suspension being at right angles to the direction of flow of the suspension, the method also comprising providing a binder on the fibres. The binder may be applied after deposition on the support or by means of the liquid of the suspension which is a solution of the binder. In a preferred embodiment the support may be in the form of an endless belt 5A which passes round a roller 6 at the surface of the suspension 2 in a duct 1. Alternatively an auxiliary foil 5B may form the support and pass round the roller 6 with the endless belt 5A. The fibres in the suspension may be aligned by means of a stream of air from a pipe 4, which stream skims the surface of the suspension. In a preferred embodiment, the fibres are aligned transversely to the direction of movement of the support; to align the fibres in the direction of movement of the support an air stream is directed transversely of the direction of flow of the suspension. The remaining liquid of the suspension is driven off by heaters 7 and a binder, e.g. an epoxy resin, is added in liquid form at 8. The carrier liquid of the binder is driven off and the binder prehardened by radiation heaters 9. The resulting strip 10 is wound on to supply reel 13. The specific gravity of the liquid of the suspension is preferably 10-30% higher than the specific gravity of the fibre material. The binder may be present in the suspension in a dissolved or emulsified state. Suitable fibre marterials stated are silicon carbide, silicon nitride, aluminium oxide, aluminium borate, beryllium oxide, boron' oxide, boron nitride, metal carbide, graphite and asbestos. Suitable liquid for use as the suspension include diiodomethane, dibromomethane, 1-2-dibromomethane, tridibromomethane, aqueous solutions of thallium formate-malorate, zinc stearate or mixtures such as methylene: iodide with carbon tetrachloride or benzene. The resultant strip material may be wound on a jig and hardened or several strips may be layered and moulded to the appropriate article. The fibres are preferably in whisker form.
