Abstract

1292254 R.F. couplings PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 July 1971 [17 July 1970] 33054/71 Heading H4A [Also in Division H2] In a method of manufacturing a T.V. or other aerial connection box in which the inner and outer members of a coaxial type plug or socket are coupled via disc-shaped capacitors to connecting means for the inner and outer conductors of at least one coaxial cable, said capacitors are encapsulated prior to assembly of the connection box in synthetic resin material, to form a capacitor block subassembly. As described, a connection box comprises an insulating support 1, Fig. 2, provided with a coaxial plug-in contact member 3 having an inner-conductor contact 13 and an outer-conductor contact 15. The latter contact has four splits 17 and is bound near the top with a resilient wire 21. The connection box also comprises a capacitor block 5 in which a central capacitor at one level, and two outer capacitors at a higher level are encapsulated in a moulded synthetic resin envelope. The edges of the electrodes of the disc-shaped capacitors are completely covered by the resin, apertures being left for making connections, and the amount of resin between adjacent capacitors is kept low, to reduce mutual capacitances (Fig. 6, not shown); Shielding is provided by a container 7, into which the capacitor block 5 fits, and which has a detachable bottom 9, and by a cover-plate 11 having edges 55 which fit in a groove 57, and which overlap the edges of the container 7. A wire 43 from the upper electrode of the central capacitor is soldered to the contact 13. The upper electrodes of the outer capacitors are soldered to tags 47 from the cover-plate 11, which has integral tags 49, Fig. 4, which are soldered on assembly to the contact 15. The capacitor block 5, with the cover-plate 11, is secured to the support 1 by bending up the ends of tags 51 into chambers 53 provided in said block. The lower electrode of the central capacitor is connected to a soldering tag 27, Fig. 2, and the lower electrodes of the outer capacitors are connected by wires 45 to the container 7. A coaxial cable 23 can be inserted through a hole in the container 7, and can be connected by soldering its inner conductor 25 to the tag 27, and by securing its outer conductor 29 to a fixing tag 31 which is integral with the container 7. An auxiliary insulating strip 69 may be provided. In another embodiment, a flat insulating plate is provided which is parallel to the capacitor block cover plate, and which carries connectors for two coaxial cables (Fig. 7, not shown). Said insulating plate may also carry wiring and components.
