1291658 Fire protection in buildings METALLEICHTBAUKOMBINAT VEB 8 Dec 1970 58306/70 Heading A5A A fire protection arrangement in a building comprises at least one screening element spaced from a ceiling, wall, girder or other constructional element of a room to form a substantially closed intermediate space, water spray means in said space, and at least one aperture between said space and the room and/or the outside of the building, so that in the event of fire the heat transmitted through the screen vaporises the water spray which is released as a curtain or jet of water vapour through the aperture(s). In Fig. 1 ceiling 1 and girders 2 are screened by false ceiling 3, and sprinkler 4 is located in space 5 therebetween. On activation, water spray 6 passes as vapour through apertures 7 into room 8. In Fig. 2 screen 3 is not apertured, and steam passes through side apertures 7' into shafts 9 to the roof. In the embodiments of Figs. 3-7 (not shown), the screen is (Figs. 3, 4) a tubular surround to a vertical support; (Fig. 5) a fire door separating two rooms; (Figs. 6, 7) a false ceiling in a windowed room. The screens are heat-conductive e.g. of metal. The term "apertures" herein includes interstices and pores integral in the material employed ,as screen.
