Abstract

1291485 Separating hydrocarbons SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 22 Dec 1969 [24 Dec 1968] 62305/69 Heading C5E The separation of mixtures of hydrocarbons by gas/liquid contacting methods, in which a distillate fraction and a liquid residual fraction are formed, is carried out in the presence of an auxiliary substance comprising one or more components belonging to the same hydrocarbon type or types present in the distillate fraction but having a volatility such that it or they are substantially recovered dissolved in the residual fraction. A mixture of C 5-9 paraffins, C 6-9 naphthenes and C 6-9 aromatics containing 83 wt. per cent sulpholane is distilled in a glass sieve-tray column of diameter 50 mm. with 0À1 and 3 p.p.m. hexadecane or with 0À01 and 3 p.p.m. of kerosine mainly composed of C 12-17 paraffins. Paraffins can be separated as the distillate fraction from heavier fractions of aromatics and selective solvents, such as diethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, phenol, aniline, furfural, N-methyl pyrrolidone and N-methyl piperidone, using paraffins as auxiliary substances. Aromatics can be separated from pyrolysis gasoline or platformate in which case the auxiliary substance comprises paraffins provided by kerosine and/or gas oil.
