Abstract
1291446 Centrifugal separators; centrifugal strainers PENNWALT CORP 15 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 50678/69 Headings B2P and B1D In a centrifuge of the type described in Specification 1,183,858, the means for detecting the level of solids in the centrifuge bowl 22 comprises channel-shaped ring 60 mounted on top of the bowl and provided in its floor with equi-spaced threaded openings in which are secured solids-level sensing tubes 62 which extend outwardly into the bowl to the maximum desired solids level A. Control liquid, which may be water under pressure or clarified liquid from an effluent tank 46 connected to the centrifuge is fed continuously or intermittently to the interior of the ring 60 through a line 66 and via a flow control valve 67 and sensing means 68 responsive to the build up of control liquid in the ring 60 upon obstruction of the outlet openings 63 of the tubes 62 by accumulated solids. The sensing means 68 may be a pressure-responsive switch sensitive to the build up of pressure in the flow of control liquid; a flow-responsive switch sensitive to the decrease in the flow rate of the control liquid; or a velocity-responsive switch responsive to the decrease in the velocity of the control liquid. The switch 68 is electrically connected to the solenoid-operated feed valve 36 and to the drive means 56 for the skimmer 50 and, optionally, to the control valve 67 which would then be solenoidoperated and would be shut and opened at the same time as the valve 36. The build-up of control liquid in the ring 60 may alternatively be sensed by a skimmer tube connected to a pressure-responsive switch similar to the switch 68. Both the pressure-responsive switch and the depth at which the line 66 opens into the ring 60 may be adjustable to vary the depth of solids accumulation before actuation of discharge. Instead of the clarified liquid discharging over the lip 32 at the upper end of the bowl, it may do so through perforations in the wall 57. In this case the skimmer 50 may be omitted and a radially movable knife or peeler may be substituted to discharge the accumulated solids.
