Abstract

1291191 Isomerization and disproportionation of methyl phenol CHEMISCHE WEEK LOWI GmbH 8 Jan 1970 943/70 Heading C2C A process for the conversion to cresols of methylphenols with more than one methyl substituent, in the liquid phase, comprises heating the methylated phenols in the presence of phenol with an aluminium phenolate, -methylate or aluminium oxide catalyst at 340-400‹ C. over a period of hours at a pressure of 15-50 atmospheres. In the examples, 2,6-dimethylphenol and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol are demethylated to orthocresol and 2,4-dimethylphenol.
