Abstract

1290888 Microwave heating apparatus J H A SOULIER 6 Nov 1969 [5 Dec 1968]. 54478/69 Heading H5H A microwave furnace for treating dielectric materials, such as pieces of rubber 57, passed therethrough, comprises two complementary semi-cylindrical half-shells 11, 14, assembled longitudinally to each other with a rectangular section supply waveguide 13 arranged transversely thereto for transmitting microwave radiation along the tunnel furnace corridor 22. Pieces 57 for treatment are passed through the corridor 22 on a conveyer belt 8 with guide suppbrts 56 to prevent sagging. The upper halfshell 14 is pivoted on spindles 18 in supports 19 formed by the main furnace body 9 so that it may be swung aside for maintenance of the furnace, and the half-shells are secured together at the other lateral side of the body 9 by pivoted threaded rods 20 with tightening screws 21 bearing on the mating flanges 12, 15 of the halfshells 11, 14. Suitable seals 16, 17 are provided to prevent radiation leakage, seals 17 being of metal braid. Supporting jacks 37, 38, on a plate 36 carried by a supporting frame 1, provide for adjustment of the furnace relative to the fixed conveyer belt 8. A nozzle 23 on the other side of the waveguide 13 to the tunnel corridor 23, includes a movable tuning piston 24. The waveguide 13 has its own adjustable tuning reflector 29, Fig. 7 (not shown). The corridor 22 is lined by spaced conductive rings 63 at half-wavelength intervals. A tetrafluoroethylene sleeve 66 prevents escape of vapours from the corridor 22 into the waveguide 13. A radiation absorbing plug 58 helps to seal round the exit from corridor 22. Conveyer belt 8 is silicon-coated glass fabric.
