Abstract
1290211 Producing lead alkyl electrolytically ASSOCIATED OCTEL CO Ltd 25 May 1971 [18 June 1970] 29673/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] In a process for the manufacture of lead alkyl by the cathodic reduction of an alkyl halide in an electrolytic cell having a lead cathode, the electrolyte comprises a solution of alkyl halide in dimethylformamide containing a dimethyl formamide soluble salt of an alkali metal. The salt may be Na CLO 4 , NaI or NaBr. The alkyl halide may be C 1 -C 4 such as methyl or ethyl halide. The concentration of alkyl halide in the dimethyl formamide solution is 0À5-5À0 mol/litre. The anode is Pt and the cathode may be a packed bed of lead shot. The cathode compartment is stirred with nitrogen and the electrolysis is carried out at room temperature.
