Abstract

128,897. Savon, R. June 25, 1918, [Convention date]. Tubes such as are used for the framework of aeroplanes &c., are joined together, or to other parts by means of a metal hoop or band, which is compressed so as to clamp the tube to an internal corrugated ferrule or the like. A tube 1 is connected to a corrugated enlargement of a member 2 by means of an external band 4, which may be plain or corrugated before being placed around the end of the tube 1 so as to embrace the corrugated surface 3 and the end of the tube 1. The joint is completed by compressing the band 4 by means of the press shown in Fig. 6, or this pressing operation may be effected in two stages in the same press, or in other ways. The press comprises a tube 30 arranged to be moved' longitudinally in a framing 21 to which it is splined by means of a nut 27 which can be rotated in the framing by means of arms or spokes 28 but is preverted from longitudinal movement by a shoulder 29. The end of the tube 30 is formed with a conical portion 33 split into eight sections, and as these ride over a conical surface 26 on the frame they are compressed on to the band 4 and compress this band radially. The application to a five-wey joint especially suitable for aeroplanes comprises a tube 11, Fig. 5, which forms two elements of the joint and is compressed on to an internal corrugated ferrule, and is engaged by a split corrugated clamp 13 held by means of bolts 14, and forked at 15, 16 to receive a tube 18, and two inclined tie-rods 19, 20, these three elements of the joint being secured by a nut on a threaded extension of the tube 18. The invention is applicable for connecting two tubes end to end.
