Abstract

1288481 Automatic control of rolling VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHE WERKEFOKKER GmbH 11 Feb 1970 [21 June 1969] 6692/70 Heading G3R [Also in Division G1] The gap between mill rolls is automatically regulated in response to variations of the spacing between an armature, mounted on one roll journal, and an associated inductor, mounted on the other roll journal, connected to an adjacent inductor to provide compensation in a bridge circuit which also includes a gap-setting and a further compensating inductor. In Fig.2, plates 12, 17 are respectively attached to members (not shown) which respectively slip over the shafts of lower and upper working rolls of a rolling mill stand so that the gap 37 between them is equal to that between the rolls. One plate contains a core 32 and the other the armature 35 of an inductance which varies with the air gap and forms, with a fixed inductance 31, one section of a bridge circuit. Inductance 31 is located in plate 12 so as to experience the same temperature variations and, if the plates are of non-magnetic material, magnetic screens 40, 41, 42 are provided. A further inductance (not shown) is adjustable to set the gap desired and is connected with a further fixed inductance to form the other section of the bridge which is supplied with A. C. of suitable frequency and controls, through a rectifier and operational amplifier, an electro-hydraulic servosystem varying the pressure on the lower working roll to maintain the desired gap. The gain of the operational amplifier is varied automatically with the setting of the gap desired, to compensate for non- linearity of the variable inductance.
