Abstract

1,258,421. Rolling mills. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 2 Jan., 1969 [16 Jan., 1968], No. 307/69. Heading B3M. A control system for a continuous strip mill regulates the flow of coolant on to the strip in accordance with both the acceleration of a strip during rolling and with the delay period between rolling the leading and trailing ends of the strip. As the delay period increases, the strip loses more heat, and less coolant is required. Conversely, as the acceleration increases more coolant is required. Coolant is supplied by assemblies 40 on to a strip 84, the flow of coolant being controlled by a computer system. The system controls a flow valve in response to signals from pyrometers 24, 50 and 51, from load cells 38 indicating the presence of the strip in the stands, and from input data relating to the initial slab parameters. The degree of opening of the valve is sensed and is fed back to the computer system using a feedback loop. The strip leaves the mill with a uniform temperature. Before the strip is rolled in the mill 26, it is rolled in a roughing mill 16 and passed to a delay table 22.
