Abstract
1288248 Foundry sand containing an olefin polymer RAVENSBERGER EISENHUTTE REINSHAGEN & VOGT 7 Nov 1969 [7 Nov 1968 17 Oct 1969] 54689/69 Headings C3N and C3P A foundry moulding sand composition comprises sand, a binder, and unexpanded particles of a polymer which is a homopolymer of an olefin or an aromatic olefin or a copolymer of at least two monomers selected from olefins and aromatic olefins; the polymer having a particle size of less than 0À3 mm. and forming 0À05-3%, preferably 0À5-2%, by weight of the moulding composition. The polymer may be polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene, propylene-styrene or ethylene-propylenestyrene copolymer. The polymer may be added in the form of a dry powder, a suspension or emulsion. The polymer may be a pearl polymerization product preferably coated with a colloidal layer of bentonite. The binder is preferably a clay such as bentonite and may be used in an amount 5-10% by weight, preferably 6-8%, based on the weight of sand. The composition is thereafter mixed with sufficient water such as 3-7%, suitably 4-6%, by weight based on the weight of the sand. The prior art refers to the addition of coal dust, lignite dust, finely powdered pitch with or without clay, cement, lime, gypsum, flue dust or lignite dust, and polystyrene to foundry sands.
