Abstract

1288193 Protein food RALSTON PURINA CO 21 April 1971 [18 May 1970] 10399/71 Heading A2B An expanded food product comprising a puffed structure derived from a secondary protein source material and an edible organic liquid, may be prepared by mixing the material having a 30-80 wt. % protein content -with 10-50 wt. % organic liquid mechanically working the mixture under pressure and above 212‹F to render it flowable, and extruding through an orifice into an environment of lower pressure so that it expands to give a puffed structure. The extrusion may be effected in two stages, first into a chamber at elevated temperature and pressure, and therefrom via a second orifice into the atmosphere. Secondary protein materials, being material not directly included in human diet, include oilseed, e.g. cottonseed or soy, meal, meat, fish, and poultry by-products, e.g. obtained by rendering down offal, feathers, or blood, for example meat, fish, or poultry meats, and protein obtained from microbial sources such as brewers or torula yeast or petroleum protein, obtained by cultivating microbes in gas oil media. The organic liquid is preferably glycerol or propylene glycol.
