Abstract

1287744 Cleaning rails BRITISH BAILWAYS BOARD 25 Nov 1969 [5 Dec 1968] 57782/68 Heading B7J [Also in Divisions C7 and H5] A method of cleaning a rail 12 comprises subjecting the head of the rail to the gas jet from a plasma-arc torch 10 operated predominantly in the non-transferred mode, but with an additional current passed between the torch and the head of the rail, no second arc being produced by this additional current. Separate high-reactance power supplies 1 and 2 supply the A.C. current for the plasma torch and the additional current respectively. The supplies have a common terminal on their negative side, which is connected to the cathode 9 of the torch, the positive terminal of supply 1 being connected to the anode 11 of the torch and the positive terminal of supply 2 being connected to the rail 12 via a contactor switch 13, the frame of a bogie 14, a heavy current connection 15 and the bogie axle of a wheel running on the rail. The A.C. supply 2 can be replaced by a D.C. generator. Said supplies have falling current/voltage characteristics and the voltage across the torch cathode and rail ranges from 25 to 300 volts. The gas mixtures used are (a) argon and hydrogen, (b) nitrogen and (c) compressed air.
