Abstract

1286646 Explosive compositions TALLEY INDUSTRIES Inc 26 Nov 1969 57825/69 Heading C1D [Also in Division E1] A method of fracturing a formation adjacent a well bore comprises injecting through a tube extending from the surface through the well bore to a level adjacent the formation a slurry consisting of a fluid dispersive medium capable of desensitizing a granular explosive dispersed therein, one or more granular solid explosives which are organic nitro compounds for example- RDX, HMX, PETN or TNT-of high explosive power and which are essentially non-hygroscopic and insoluble in the dispersive medium, evenly dispersed throughout the dispersive medium, and a gelling agent for maintaining the granular solid explosive evenly dispersed throughout the dispersive medium under conditions of pressure and temperature existing in well fracturing, placing a detonating device containing a high explosive charge within the slurry in the well bore, and detonating the high explosive charge to explode the slurry, thereby fracturing said formation. The dispersive medium may be water, hexane, kerosene, or alcohol, and the gelling agent a carboxy vinyl polymer, a fatty acid or protein colloid gelling agent, aluminium silicate, or a metallo-organic compound. Finely powdered metals may be added to a non-aqueous slurry.
