Abstract
1286301 Alarm circuit ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 April 1970 [23 Jan 1969] 3870/69 Heading G4N An electric circuit for use with an alarm system detects when a signal exceeds a predetermined value or when the rate of change of signal is excessive. The difference between the signal and the predetermined value is amplified by a chopper amplifier, part of the output being fed back to provide the chopping signal. The input to the alarm circuit at 1, may be a thermocouple in a nuclear reactor. The input is combined with a fixed voltage from 2 and fed to a chopper circuit 3 which feeds amplifier 4. The signal from amplifier 4-3 rectified at 6 and fed to sampling circuit 9 in which a sample value of the input is stored and compared with the current input to indicate changes in the input. The difference signal between the stored value of the input and the current input is fed from differential amplifier 15 to the chopper circuit 3. Other outputs are supplied via differential amplifiers 16 and 17, and OR gate 21, to alarms 22. Thus if the rate of change of input exceeds a certain predetermined value, set by the sample interval and the amplitude of pulses from pulse generator 11, an alarm signal is produced. If the input exceeds a certain preset value produced by voltage divider 2, which gives a voltage opposing the signal voltage, an alarm signal is again produced via rectifier 6 differential amplifier 10 and OR gates 21. If the predetermined value is exceeded a signal is passed via power amplifier 7 and rectifier 8 to activate an input to control the unwanted condition. The sampling circuit 9 comprises field effect transistor 23 whose control electrode is fed from the sample pulse generator. The input is used to charge up capacitor 24 during the sample period, the charge being retained on capacitor 24 when transistor 23 is switched off. The stored potential carried on capacitor 24 together with the output of oscillator 11 is compared with the input via field effect transistors 26 and 27, transistors 32 and 33 and differential amplifiers 15, 16 and 17. If the output of oscillator 11 is biased by the output of rectifier 6 so that no change in polarity occurs, the amplifier 15 does not have a square wave output and the input signal 3 not chopped. This causes an alarm condition to be registered i.e. if the input changes by a value greater than the amplitude of the square wave from oscillator 11 between sample periods an alarm condition is produced.
