1286146 Destructible cores P A GRIX 31 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 16864/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1] A destructible core B of, for example, foamed polystyrene, is carried within a metal mounting member A comprising a base portion 1, a pair of limbs 2 diverging from the base portion, and a pair of fingers 5 projecting from the ends of the limbs and engaging the rear surface of the core. The base portion is provided with a central removable portion 7 and the limbs, when the base portion is disposed vertically, slope downwardly. In use, the mounting member is fixed against the vertical side of a mould or shuttering, the core positioned therein, and the concrete cast to a level at which the downwardly sloping limbs are embedded and the upper surface of the core is visible. Subsequently the core is burnt out to leave a peripherally reinforced cavity into which the lower ends of posts or the like may be cemented. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 12 a concrete foundation is cast in wooden shuttering to the side walls of which is attached a core which is subsequently removed to leave a cavity D. The base portion is flush with the edge of the foundation and the removable portion has been removed to allow the laterally projecting end F1 of a baluster F or the like to be inserted through the hole 5 into the cavity where it is secured by a grouting cement. If desired the portion 7 need not be removed, the end of a straight pole or rod being located within the cavity and grouted in position. In alternative embodiments in which the base portion 1 is embedded within the foundation, a spacer block of foamed polystyrene is interposed between the mounting member and the shuttering and, after removal of the spacer block and core, the base portion lies inwardly and not flush with the edge of the foundation (see Fig. 18). The space between base portion and the edge of the foundation is filled with the cement to grout the poles or rods in place.
