Abstract

1285883 Thread cutting processes UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Oct 1969 [18 Oct 1968] 49679/68 Headings B3N and B3T A nuclear fuel element sheath comprises a thin walled tube having a helical fin formed on the tube by a thread cutting process. The tube can be mounted in a lathe and dies mounted in a diehead which can be fed along the tube. Preferably the dies project radially with respect to the tube and the top or cutting face is inclined at 2À50 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece so as to raise all but the first tooth above the centre line of the work. Thus only the throat and first tooth cut, the remaining teeth acting as guides. Further modifications provide a throat angle of 10 degrees and a positive top rake angle of 26 degrees. The dies may be mounted tangentially with respect to the tube. Preferably a silicon loaded mineral oil lubricant is used during the cutting operation.
