Abstract

1285709 Semi-conductor devices JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 2 Oct 1969 8940/72 and 8941/72 Divided out of 1285708 Heading H1K A plurality of similar semi-conductor devices 15 are manufactured from a wafer by dividing it so as to form a plurality of separate devices with channels therebetween, each channel exposing a PN junction, pouring a curable compound into the channels, and curing the compound so as to form a membrane 17 interconnecting the devices. The wafer division may be by means of etching, using a wax masking layer on the wafer, and the compound may be a silicon based, cross-linked, synthetic rubber material. Prior to masking, the wafer may have contacts plated thereon, and during the soldering of electrodes to the contacts, a device severed from the membrane may have its surrounding portion of the membrane left intact, or decomposed, at the chosen soldering temperature. The membrane may be flexible or brittle, in the latter case devices being separated by fracture of the membrane.
