Abstract

1285669 Packaging machines; pneumatic and endless conveyers INTECH CORP 1 July 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 30806/71 Headings B8A and B8C In a method and apparatus for packaging hosiery articles, each article 22 is vacuum formed to the general configuration of a packaging carton C which receives the article. The articles leave shrinking and dyeing apparatus 10 and are conveyed separately to either of a pair of semi-boarding machines 12 along a pneumatic conveyer system 20. Vacuum assist devices 24 load the articles 22 on to frames 26 which are then expanded and moved on endless chain 30 past an inspection screen and then to inlet 34 of a dumb-bell section pneumatic tube 36 of conveyer 14. Inlet 34 leads first to a selector valve assembly in which element 178 is movable, by a fluid motor controlled by the operator, to any of three positions, (a) via pipe 378 to a packaging station 18, (b) via pipe 40 to a stacking station 16, or (c) via pipe 46 to a reject bag 44. At each stacking station, a tray 208 with central divider 210 is placed on platform 218 adjacent outlet 256 of pipe 240 and is lowered until filled with stacked articles 22. Switches 236, 238 limit the shift of platform 218 and control the supply of trays. Switch 256 actuates a counter determining the number of articles and controlling a pivoting action of pipe 240 to assist discharge of the articles. Collapsed cartons are removed from magazine J1 by suction gripper J46 and are erected and moved along rails J47, J55 by lugs J24 on endless chains J22, J23 to underlie opening 312 in a plate 310 of carton filling mechanism. Vacuum-forming chamber assembly 328 extends between plate 310 and another plate 320 apertured at 324, 326, and is movable from the position of Fig. 15, in which an article 22 is received, to the broken-line position where the formed article is pushed by head 368 down into a carton C. Vacuum applied from tube 316 draws an article from table 380 along conduit 382 to assembly 328 for shaping.
