Abstract

1285414 Paper-making apparatus BIRD MACHINE CO 2 Oct 1970 47005/70 Heading D2A [Also in Division F4] Appartus for extracting liquid from a travelling porous web F, e.g. a felt of a papermaking machine comprises a manifold 10 extending across the web and having an inlet 42, a gas jet outlet directed at an angle to the plane of the web so that the jet is reflected back by the web into the manifold carrying entrained liquid with it, and a wall member 44 having an edge 50 engaging the web between the manifold and the jet outlet. The manifold may be under suction in which case it may be disposed above the web or to either side of a vertical run of the web, and the manifold may be adjustably mounted. The gas, which may be air or steam, is supplied to a manifold 30 from which it flows through holes 58 to the jet outlet preferably provided as a line of spaced slots. Adjustment in the length of the inlet 42 is provided by slidably mounted_end bars. Equipment for prior wetting of the web may be provided. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the web extends round a backing roll, and a further suction inlet may follow the jet outlet. A separate manifold may be provided for the latter inlet, particularly if the inlet 42 is not subject to suction.
