Abstract
1284738 Metal-air cells SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 27 April 1970 [5 May 1969] 22805/69 Addition to 1140635 Heading H1B An electric cell comprises an electrolyte 2, at least one metal or metal alloy electrode 3 and an air electrode 4, comprising a porous non- conductive support sheet 5 on which is superimposed a conductive layer 6 carrying a catalyst layer 7, the catalyst layer being in contact with the electrolyte. The electrolyte may be a solution of an alkali metal halide, but preferably not sodium chloride. The metal or alloy electrode may be of Mg or Mg alloy. The porous non- conductive layer may be of polythene, P.V.C. or P.T.F.E. or a less hydrophobic material treated with a hydrophobic agent. Two such layers may be separated by a P.V.C. spacer 8. A nickel mesh 9 may be stuck over the catalyst layer by a conductive adhesive comprising a mixture of epoxy-resin and silvered glass beads. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a battery of such cells.
