Abstract

1,140,635. Magnesium-air cells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 3 Nov., 1967, No. 50030/67. Heading H1B. An electric cell comprises a magnesium or magnesium alloy electrode, an air electrode comprising a porous, non-conducting supporting surface carrying a catalyst layer superimposed on a conductive layer and, as electrolyte, an aqueous solution of an alkali metal halide or a mixture of alkali metal halides excluding sodium chloride, the alkali metal having an atomic number of 3-55 and the halogen having an atomic number of 9-53. A suitable magnesium alloy contains aluminium, zinc and 90% magnesium. Alkali metal halides disclosed are KI, NaBr, LiBr and KBr in 2-3 M concentration. The electrolyte may contain about 0-02% of a corrosion inhibitor, e.g. sodium, lithium or potassium chromate. A number of cells may be connected to form a battery. In a particular embodiment Mg or Mg alloy electrodes 3 are flat plates. Air electrode 4 comprises a spaced pair of sheets of P.V.C., P.T.F.E. or polythene coated with a metal layer 6 carrying catalyst layer 7. The metal may be Ag, Au, Ni or Bi/Pb alloy and the catalyst Ag on carbon, Pd on carbon, Pt on carbon or Pt black. The spacer 8 may be of P.V.C. and the nickel meshes 9 may be stuck to it with a conductive adhesive, e.g. a mixture of epoxy-resin and silvered glass beads. The spacer includes an air inlet and outlet (not shown).
