Abstract

1284506 Error and fault checking SIEMENS AG 22 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 60713/70 Heading G4A A data processing system, e.g. a system operating in real time to control a telephone exchange, comprises two processors each having a number of associated stores and synchronously effecting identical operations, and two comparators, one for each processor, which indicate whether the data produced by the processors are identical, the arrangement being such that where produced store addresses are non-identical a read cycle only is performed on the store in which data was to be stored and in the case of identical outputs a read/write cycle is performed to store the data at the addressed location. When a mismatch is detected in the processor addressing outputs diagnostic programmes are initiated and in the case where one of the processors is found to be faulty, further processing or store accessing is performed using the other, correctly functioning, processor. Store control devices are provided for operating the stores and the coded outputs from these devices are also compared, the correctly functioning device taking over control of all the stores if one of the devices is found to be faulty. The address data may also be checked, inadmissible addresses being used to cause a read cycle only to be effected on the appropriate store. Parity checks may also be made on data to be written into or read from the stores.
