Abstract
1284499 Pyrotechnic compositions PAINS. WESSEX Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 14697/70 Heading C1D A pyrotechnic light-producing composition for use in a signal flare comprises polyisobutene as a binder. The composition also includes a solid oxidizing agent and may contain magnesium powder together with a salt of Li, Na, K, Sr, or Ba as a colouring agent. In place of magnesium, at least 5% of a copper compound may be added to produce blue light, or a strontium or barium salt may be used alone to produce a less intense red or green light. Suitable oxidizing agents are nitrates, carbonates, perchlorates, and oxalates. Other ingredients referred to are a chlorinated organic compound to intensify the light, oxamide as a moderator, and an organic sulphate, an inorganic salt of an esterified dibasic sulphonated acid, or an ester of a long-chain fatty acid as a surface-active agent. Ingredients used in examples in addition to the binder are magnesium powder, potassium perchlorate, strontium, barium, potassium, and sodium nitrates, and copper arsenate. The ingredients may be mixed under vacuum and the mixture compressed or extruded.
