Abstract
1284469 Iron-containing catalysts STAMICARBON NV 5 Dec 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 59670/ 69 Heading B1E A supported catalyst containing iron and, optionally, one or more of Ni, Co, Zn and Mn is prepared by precipitating the iron and other metals, if present, together as a compound MO.Fe 2 O 3 where M is Fe, Ni, Co, Zn or Mn from an aqueous solution, containing the M metal ions in the bivalent form onto a carrier suspended in the solution, by gradually and homogeneously converting the bivalent iron ions to the trivalent state at pH 2 to 6.5 under controlled temperature conditions whilst agitating the solution. The loaded carrier material is then separated, washed and dried and then optionally further treated, e.g. by calcination followed by reduction. The iron ions are oxidised by addition of nitrate or nitrite ions, halogen oxy-acids, potassium permanganate. Specified carriers are silica, e.g. kieselguhr, alumina, titania, thoria or clays. The preparation is suitably carried out under an inert atmosphere. The Examples describe the preparation of silicon supported catalysts comprising (i) Co-Fe, (ii) Co-Fe-Mn and (iii) Fe only.
